Vaca Muerta, meaning “Dead Cow” in English, earned its name in the 19th century when fossilized remains of megafauna, including giant ground sloths and glyptodonts, were unearthed in the Vaca Muerta formation. Initially dubbed “Vaca Muerta” by early geologists due to the abundance of fossils, the name became official after the discovery of substantial petroleum reserves in the Vaca Muerta shale rock during the late 20th century.
